Role of AVP - Google Cloud Platform (GCP) Position Title Cloud Engineer Role The AVP for GCP will be responsible for leading cloud architecture, strategy, and engineering teams that design, implement, and manage Google Cloud Platform services. The role requires both deep technical expertise in cloud computing and strong leadership abilities to manage cross-functional teams and projects. The AVP will drive GCP initiatives, ensuring alignment with business goals, security standards, and cost-efficiency. Reporting to R1- VP - IT, Digital Infrastructure R2- EVP- IT, Digital Infrastructure Key Responsibilities 1. Cloud Strategy & Architecture: • Lead the design and deployment of highly scalable and reliable cloud-based solutions on Google Cloud Platform. • Architect cloud infrastructure using GCP services such as Compute Engine, Kubernetes Engine, BigQuery, Cloud Functions, and Pub/Sub. • Develop a multi-cloud or hybrid cloud architecture by integrating GCP with other cloud providers (AWS, Azure) or on-premises systems. 2. Cloud Engineering & Automation: • Oversee the automation of infrastructure provisioning and management using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform or Google Deployment Manager. • Ensure implementation of CI/CD pipelines using tools like Jenkins, Google Cloud Build, and Spinnaker for seamless deployment and testing. • Implement containerization and orchestration using Kubernetes (GKE) and Docker, and manage microservicesbased architectures. 3. Security & Compliance: • Enforce cloud security best practices by implementing Identity and Access Management (IAM), VPC network security, data encryption, and cloud firewall policies. • Ensure GCP solutions comply with industry regulations and standards such as GDPR, HIPAA, PCI-DSS, etc. • Develop and manage security monitoring, threat detection, and incident response strategies using tools like Google Cloud Security Command Center. 4. Performance Optimization: • Oversee resource optimization through cloud cost management strategies using GCP’s cost monitoring and billing tools. • Manage the performance of cloud-based systems, ensuring high availability and disaster recovery (DR) solutions are in place. • Troubleshoot and resolve complex cloud infrastructure issues by working closely with the engineering team. 5. Data & Analytics: • Leverage GCP data and analytics services such as BigQuery, Internal Dataproc, and AI/ML services to build data-driven solutions that support business decision-making. • Oversee cloud-based data pipelines, data lake implementations, and machine learning (ML) models. Managerial Responsibilities 1. Leadership & Team Management: • Lead and mentor a team of cloud architects, DevOps engineers, and data engineers, ensuring skills development and technical excellence. • Set technical direction, priorities, and goals for the cloud teams, aligning them with overall business objectives. • Foster a culture of innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement within the team. 2. Cloud Strategy & Roadmap: • Collaborate with senior leadership to define and execute the organization’s cloud strategy and roadmap for GCP adoption and expansion. • Manage relationships with key internal stakeholders to ensure cloud initiatives align with the organization’s goals and technical requirements. • Regularly report on the status of GCP projects, cloud usage, security, and cost performance to executive leadership. 3. Project Management: • Oversee the end-to-end execution of cloud projects, ensuring timely delivery and alignment with project scope, budget, and resources. • Implement Agile or DevOps methodologies for project delivery, ensuring that teams are delivering in an iterative, collaborative environment. • Partner with external vendors and GCP partners to ensure effective delivery of cloud services and solutions. 4. Risk Management & Governance: • Identify, assess, and manage risks associated with cloud infrastructure, data security, and scalability. • Establish governance policies around cloud use, ensuring adherence to compliance standards and mitigating risks around data privacy, cost overruns, and security vulnerabilities. 5. Financial & Vendor Management: • Develop and manage cloud budgets, monitor cloud costs, and optimize spending through the use of tools such as Google Cloud Pricing Calculator and Budget Alerts. • Negotiate and manage contracts with cloud service providers, consultants, and third-party vendors. Skills Technical Skills: • Strong expertise in Google Cloud Platform services: Compute Engine, Cloud Storage, BigQuery, Kubernetes Engine (GKE), VPC, IAM, Pub/Sub, Cloud Spanner, Dataproc, and others. • In-depth understanding of cloud infrastructure design including VMs, containers, networking, security, and serverless architecture. Internal • Experience in Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools (Terraform, Google Cloud Deployment Manager). • Proficiency in scripting and automation tools (Python, Bash, Terraform). • Knowledge of DevOps practices and tools: CI/CD pipelines, Jenkins, GitOps, Google Cloud Build, Docker, Kubernetes. • Strong background in cloud security: IAM, VPC, KMS, encryption, Cloud Security Command Center. • Hands-on experience with cloud cost management and monitoring tools such as Google Cloud Monitoring, Stackdriver, and cost optimization frameworks. Managerial & Leadership Skills: • Proven leadership experience in managing cloud teams, with strong interpersonal and team-building skills. • Ability to strategically align cloud initiatives with business goals and drive results. • Strong understanding of Agile, DevOps, and ITIL methodologies. • Excellent communication skills to liaise between technical teams, business leaders, and external vendors. • Experience with budget management, contract negotiation, and vendor relationships. • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities, with a focus on innovation and operational efficiency. Experience • 8+ years of experience in cloud computing, with at least 5 years in Google Cloud Platform (GCP) architecture and services. • Proven track record of successfully leading cloud initiatives and driving cloud adoption within large organizations. • Experience managing cross-functional teams and large-scale cloud migration or digital transformation projects. • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail. • Strong communication and collaboration skills. Education Qualifications • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or related fields. • AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Professional or AWS Certified DevOps Engineer is highly preferred. • Project management certifications such as PMP, ScrumMaster, or ITIL are a plus.
