Job Description:
A Chemist in the mining industry analyzes ore and other materials to determine their chemical composition and economic value, operating and maintaining lab equipment, developing new methods, and ensuring quality control and compliance with safety and environmental regulations. Key responsibilities include performing sample analysis, interpreting data, troubleshooting issues, documenting findings in reports, and collaborating with engineers and geologists to optimize mining and processing operations. A typical candidate will have a degree in Chemistry and may have prior experience in mining.
Key Responsibilities
- Sample Analysis:Prepare and conduct qualitative and quantitative analyses on mineral samples (ore, concentrates, etc.) to determine their elemental composition and concentrations.
- Quality Control:Implement and maintain quality control procedures to ensure the accuracy and reliability of all analytical results, meeting industry standards.
- Method Development:Develop, validate, and implement new analytical techniques and methodologies for material characterization and process optimization.
- Data Interpretation & Reporting:Analyze complex data sets and prepare technical reports and presentations for mine engineers, geologists, and management.
- Equipment Maintenance:Operate, calibrate, and maintain sophisticated laboratory instruments and equipment, troubleshooting any malfunctions.
- Compliance:Ensure adherence to all safety, environmental, and regulatory compliance standards within the laboratory and mining operations.
- Research & Development:Engage in research and development to improve chemical products, formulas, and extraction processes.
- Troubleshooting:Identify and resolve analytical issues, providing recommendations for improvement and solutions to operational problems.
- Environmental Monitoring:Conduct studies on water and soil samples to monitor and control environmental impacts of mining activities.
Skills & Qualifications
- Education:A Bachelor's degree (BS) in Chemistry is typically required.
- Technical Skills:Proficiency in analytical techniques such as chromatography and spectroscopy.
- Laboratory Skills:Hands-on experience with modern laboratory equipment, good laboratory practices, and sample preparation.
- Soft Skills:Strong problem-solving skills, critical thinking abilities, excellent attention to detail, and good written and verbal communication.
- Industry Knowledge:Experience in a mining environment or with relevant materials (ores, soils, etc.) is often an advantage.
- Regulatory Knowledge:Familiarity with laboratory safety protocols and relevant regulations.
