Job Description:
A Coal Washery Chemist ensures coal quality by performing proximate and ultimate analysis (moisture, ash, volatile matter, fixed carbon, sulphur) on raw and washed coal. Key responsibilities include sampling, laboratory testing, operating equipment (muffle furnace, bomb calorimeter), maintaining QA/QC standards, and reporting results to optimize washery efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
- Sample Management: Collecting, preparing, and labeling raw coal, clean coal, and rejects samples for analysis.
- Coal Analysis: Conducting, interpreting, and reporting, proximate (moisture, ash, volatile matter, fixed carbon) and ultimate (sulphur, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen) analysis.
- Testing Procedures: Operating laboratory apparatus, including balances, muffle furnaces, drying ovens, and bomb calorimeters to determine calorific value.
- Quality Control: Ensuring compliance with ASTM, ISO, or Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for coal testing.
- Data Management: Recording, analyzing, and reporting test results accurately and in a timely manner to meet production deadlines.
- Lab Maintenance: Calibrating instruments, managing chemical inventory, and enforcing safety protocols (HEHS).
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Applied Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering.
- Experience: Proven experience in a coal laboratory or similar mineral processing industry.
- Technical Skills: Deep knowledge of coal testing standards, sampling techniques, and analytical instrumentation.
- Soft Skills: Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and troubleshooting abilities.
