Job Description:
A Head Lab (Laboratory Head/Manager) for an integrated steel manufacturing plant—covering Sponge Iron (DRI), Steel Melting Shop (SMS), and Power Plant—is responsible for overseeing 24/7 quality control, analyzing raw materials, and ensuring the chemical and physical compliance of intermediate and finished products. This senior role demands technical expertise in metallurgy, team management, and strict adherence to safety and environmental regulations.
Key Responsibilities
1. Operational Leadership & Team Management
- 24/7 Lab Support: Supervise lab staff and manage shift duties to ensure continuous testing support for production.
- Team Training: Mentor and train laboratory technicians on proper testing procedures, safety protocols, and equipment handling.
- Workflow Optimization: Manage daily laboratory operations to ensure timely, accurate analysis of samples.
2. Quality Control & Analytical Testing (DRI, SMS, Power)
- Raw Material Analysis: Direct the analysis of iron ore, coal, dolomite, limestone, and iron pellets.
- Process Analysis: Test in-process samples (e.g., slag, metal, gas, and water) for process control.
- Finished Product Testing: Verify quality of Sponge Iron (DRI/SID) and Steel Billet/Ingots.
- Power Plant Support: Analyze water quality for the boiler/water treatment plant (WTP).
3. Equipment Management & Calibration
- Instrumentation: Oversee the calibration, maintenance, and repair of lab equipment, including Spectrometers, X-ray Fluorescence (XRF), and physical testing machines.
- Quality Assurance: Ensure all test procedures align with international standards (e.g., BIS, ISO).
4. Safety & Documentation
- Compliance: Implement safety systems, including proper chemical handling, and maintain accurate records for reporting and troubleshooting.
Desired Candidate Profile
- Qualifications: Typically requires a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemistry, Metallurgy, or Materials Science and extensive experience (5-10+ years) in a steel plant laboratory, particularly in DRI/SMS.
- Skills: Strong technical knowledge of analytical methods like Spectrometry and NDT techniques, along with leadership skills to manage teams in a demanding environment.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
Performance is often measured by sample analysis turnaround time (TAT), accuracy of results, calibration compliance, and laboratory safety records.
