Job Description:
An INCHARGE with an MSc or BSc for a power plant is responsible for the chemistry and water treatment processes. This position, also known as a Shift In-charge (Chemical), Plant Chemist, or Water Treatment In-charge, is crucial for maintaining operational efficiency, preventing equipment damage, and ensuring environmental compliance.
Roles and responsibilities
- Supervision and management: Oversee all shift operations related to the power plant's water treatment plant (WTP) and chemical laboratory. This includes supervising lab technicians and water treatment plant operators.
- Chemical analysis and quality control: Conduct and supervise the chemical analysis of water, steam, and fuel to ensure they meet specified standards. Key analyses include monitoring pH, chlorine levels, and dissolved solids.
- Water treatment management: Control and adjust the water treatment process, which may include coagulation, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection, to maintain optimal water quality for the plant's systems.
- Operational monitoring: Monitor chemical feed systems and online instruments to ensure their proper functioning and to make real-time adjustments to plant operations.
- Troubleshooting: Identify and resolve operational issues related to water chemistry to prevent equipment problems like corrosion or scaling.
- Maintenance coordination: Coordinate with maintenance teams to ensure the timely inspection, upkeep, and cleaning of chemical and water treatment equipment.
- Safety and compliance: Enforce and ensure strict adherence to all safety protocols and environmental regulations, including proper handling of hazardous chemicals and disposal of effluent.
- Reporting and documentation: Maintain accurate logs and records of all shift activities, test results, and chemical consumption. Prepare and submit daily and monthly reports for management and regulatory bodies.
- Training: Train and mentor junior operators and technicians to enhance their skills and ensure all personnel are familiar with operating procedures and safety protocols.
Qualifications and skills
- Education: A Bachelor of Science (BSc) or Master of Science (MSc) in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field is typically required.
- Experience: Previous experience in a power plant, water treatment facility, or chemical manufacturing environment is often necessary, especially in a supervisory or leadership capacity.
- Technical knowledge: Strong understanding of water and steam chemistry, water treatment processes, and plant operations. Familiarity with lab equipment and analytical techniques is essential.
- Soft skills: Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills are critical for managing teams and handling emergencies.
- Certifications: Depending on regional regulations, certifications for water treatment operators may be required.
