Job Description:
A chemist working in a direct reduced iron (DRI) plant would be responsible for analyzing samples, ensuring quality control, and monitoring chemical processes to ensure the safe and efficient production of DRI, a key intermediate in steelmaking. 
 
Here's a more detailed breakdown of what a chemist in a DRI plant might do:
 
 
Key Responsibilities:
  • Sample Analysis:
    • Collect and analyze samples of raw materials (iron ore, reducing gas, etc.), intermediate products (DRI), and finished products (steel).
    • Use various analytical techniques (spectroscopy, chromatography, etc.) to determine the chemical composition and properties of these materials.
    • Ensure that the chemical composition of the DRI meets the required specifications.
  • Quality Control:
    • Conduct tests to ensure that the quality of the DRI and other materials meets the required standards.
    • Identify and address any deviations from quality standards.
    • Maintain records of all tests and analyses.
  • Process Monitoring:
    • Monitor chemical processes in the DRI plant to ensure that they are operating safely and efficiently.
    • Identify and address any potential problems that could affect the quality or safety of the DRI production process.
    • Assist in the development and improvement of DRI production processes.
  • Safety:
    • Adhere to all safety procedures and regulations when handling chemicals and equipment.
    • Ensure that the laboratory and plant are kept clean and organized.
  • Documentation and Reporting:
    • Prepare reports on the results of tests and analyses.
    • Maintain accurate records of all laboratory activities.
  • Other Duties:
    • May be involved in research and development activities related to DRI production.
    • May be required to train other laboratory personnel. 
       
 
Skills and Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of analytical chemistry techniques.
  • Experience in working with laboratory equipment.
  • Good problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills. 
     
 
Specific DRI Plant Knowledge:
  • Familiarity with the DRI production process.
  • Knowledge of the chemical reactions involved in DRI production.
  • Understanding of the properties of DRI and its use in steelmaking.
