 Production Manager - Offset

Functional Reporting To: Plant Head

Administrative Reports To: Plant Head

Work Conflict Resolution: As per the matrix of authority.

Direct Reports:

  1. Production coordinator
  2. Shift Supervisors
  3. Section supervisors

Shared direct reports

  1. Maintenance team
  2. Prepress team

Service Department:

  1. Sourcing & Procurement Department
  2. General Accounts Department
  3. Human Resource Department

Job Location: Kampala, Uganda

Qualifications & Experience:

  1. Diploma or bachelor’s degree in printing Engineering or Applied science from a reputable institution
  2. 7-10 years of hands on experience as a Production Manager in a commercial printing press (books,posters, flyers, carnets, etc).
  3. Experience managing a team of at least 30 people (shift in charge, supervisors, operators, etc)
  4. Experience running at least 2 offset presses (minimum 4 colour)
  5. Experience with gang stitching, saddle stich, perfect binding finishing machines
  6. Should have adequate knowledge and hands on experience with SAP or any other production application software.
  7. Should have adequate knowledge and hands on with Microsoft office applications like excel, word,power point, Teams etc.

Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and results-driven Production Manager to lead our Offset Printing Department,

which includes sheetfed offset machines, and various finishing machines including perfect binding, saddle stitch,

gang stitching, folder-gluer, die-cutting. The key product lines include beer labels, books, posters, flyers, carnets.

The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring efficient production workflows, maintaining high-quality

standards, managing staff performance, and achieving delivery targets. This is a hands-on leadership role that

requires excellent technical knowledge of offset printing processes combined with strong organizational and

people management skills.

 

Key Result Areas

Production Efficiency & Output

 To schedule jobs for machine program to be made by production coordinator for printing and binding as per delivery schedule.

 To ensure that that production coordinator has raised material requisition in the ERP system for all raw material as per machine

 To approve all material requisition slips, and goods receipt note in the ERP system

 To approve all jobs before printing and binding

 To ensure that jobs are printed as per daily program and delivery schedule.

 To monitor the production efficiency of all machines on hourly basis

 Optimize machine utilization and minimize downtime.

 Achieve production targets within set timelines.

 To give mounting format for new jobs to designers and to inform them of the requirement for CTP plate

 

Quality Assurance

 Ensure printed materials meet client specifications and internal quality standards.

 Implement and monitor quality control measures throughout the production cycle.

 To have meeting with Plant Head, all department supervisors and shift supervisors regarding quality issue and machine problem

 

Human Resource Management

 Manage and supervise the printing team, including press operators, helpers, and support staff.

 Provide training, coaching, and performance evaluations.

 Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.

 To check the output report of casuals made by production administrator and find out the reason for low

productivity if any and way to improve it

 Ensure operators are being trained and upskilled, to improve machine condition and efficiency

 To ensure all HR policies of the company are followed in the Offset department

 Recruit and onboard production staff, as needed

 

Cost Control & Resource Management

 Monitor and control production costs (overtime, number of contract labour used, etc), waste, and

material usage.

 Highlight any concerns around stock levels of paper, inks, critical spares and consumable to planning team

 Work with procurement to source cost-effective supplies without compromising quality.

 

Maintenance

 Plan preventative maintenance in conjunction with maintenance manager

 To ensure that all machines are maintained up to the mark and are in running condition, in conjunction with the maintenance manager

 

Health & Safety Compliance

 To make sure all procedures for ISO are followed and revised if required in Production

 To ensure all 3 rd party and supplier audits are conducted successfully

 To ensure that all the issues raised in external audit are cleared before next audit

 Enforce workplace safety practices and compliance with industry regulations.

 Maintain a safe and clean production environment.

 To make sure that all safety equipment like Fire Extinguisher and safety guards of all machines are

working

 To keep the factory premises clean and hygienic including the canteen and bailing room area

 

Raw Material Planning

 To review raw material planning on monthly/quarterly basis with planning team, highlighting any quality issues, or new requirements

Reporting & Continuous Improvement

 Provide regular reports on production performance, efficiency, and challenges.

 Recommend and implement improvements in processes, technology, and systems.

 Support the site Maintenance function in providing both reactive and proactive, multi-skilled

maintenance services on all production equipment.

 Suggest continuous improvement and modern manufacturing principles by highlighting deficiencies and recommending changes in training, working practices and processes.

 Ensuring the achievement of all Key Performance Indicators.

 Manage systems and production data storage and maintain high levels of standards and accuracy

 Perform root cause analysis and resolve technical problems.

 Maintain good working relationship with various stakeholders

 Liaise with various stakeholders as and when required (including suppliers, service providers,

government)

 Ensure the work area is kept clean and tidy
