Job Description:
A Head of Department (HOD) - Lab for a coal washery leads laboratory operations, ensuring accurate, timely analysis of coal samples (raw, washed, rejects) to maintain quality standards, optimize processing efficiency, and ensure regulatory compliance. This role involves managing lab staff, calibrating equipment, and verifying proximate/ultimate analysis data.
Key Responsibilities
- Quality Management: Oversee sampling, preparation, and testing (moisture, ash, sulfur, Calorific Value, volatile matter) to meet customer specifications.
- Operational Optimization: Analyze data to optimize washing processes and reduce product waste.
- Lab Management: Manage daily lab operations, equipment maintenance, and calibration (e.g., Bomb Calorimeter, Muffle Furnace).
- Safety & Compliance: Ensure compliance with environmental, statutory, and safety regulations regarding chemical handling and waste disposal.
- Team Leadership: Supervise, train, and develop laboratory technicians and analysts.
- Reporting: Prepare daily/monthly quality reports for management and stakeholders.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemistry, Geology, or Mineral Processing.
- Experience: 5–10+ years in coal testing, quality control, or similar mining/washery operations.
- Skills: Proficiency in coal analysis methods (IS/ISO/ASTM standards), team leadership, and data management.

- Laboratory setting within a coal washing plant, with potential exposure to dust and chemicals
