Job Description:
A mechanical welder's job description includes reading blueprints, setting up and operating welding equipment (such as MIG, TIG, or Stick), and joining metal components to build or repair structures and machinery. Key responsibilities also involve inspecting and testing welds, performing maintenance on equipment, and adhering to strict safety protocols at all times. 
 
Core duties and responsibilities
  • Interpreting technical documents: Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and specifications to plan and execute welding procedures.
  • Preparing materials: Clean, cut, and fit metal parts using hand and power tools, and set them up for welding using clamps, jigs, and fixtures.
  • Welding and fabrication: Use various welding methods like MIG, TIG, and Stick welding to join, cut, and shape metal components according to specifications.
  • Quality control: Inspect completed work for defects, ensure welds meet quality standards, and make necessary repairs to machinery and components.
  • Equipment maintenance: Operate, maintain, and clean welding machinery and tools to ensure they are in safe working order.
  • Safety compliance: Adhere to all safety regulations, including wearing proper personal protective equipment (PPE), and maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Collaboration: Work with other welders, fabricators, and supervisors to complete projects efficiently. 
 
Essential skills
  • Proficiency in reading blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Skill in operating and maintaining various welding equipment.
  • Ability to use measuring tools, hand tools, and power tools.
  • Understanding of different welding processes (MIG, TIG, Stick) and how to apply them.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
