Job Description:
A Tool Maintenance role in the sheet metal industry for candidates with 1–3 years of experience involves maintaining, repairing, and troubleshooting high-precision dies and fixtures to ensure continuous production. 
 
Core Responsibilities
  • Die Maintenance & Repair: Perform preventive and breakdown maintenance on progressive, stage, and stamping tools to prevent production delays.
  • Troubleshooting: Identify and resolve tool-related issues such as dimensional inaccuracies, burrs, or appearance defects in finished metal parts.
  • Machine Operation: Hands-on operation of tool room machinery, including surface grinders, milling machines, lathes, EDM, and wire cut machines for tool modifications.
  • Documentation: Maintain detailed logs of tool performance, repair history, and preventive maintenance schedules.
  • Quality Inspection: Use precision instruments like vernier calipers, micrometers, and various gages to verify tool and component dimensions.
  • New Tool Support: Assist in the trial and assembly of new dies, jigs, and fixtures for new product development (NPD). 
 
Required Technical Skills
  • Blueprint Reading: Proficiency in interpreting 2D engineering drawings and technical schematics.
  • Tooling Knowledge: Expertise in handling Press Tools, Jigs, Dies, and Fixtures specific to sheet metal.
  • Machining: Competence in manual and semi-automatic machining processes (drilling, tapping, grinding).
  • Measurement: Expert use of precision measuring tools to ensure adherence to tight tolerances.
  • Welding: Basic skills in TIG/MIG or spot welding for minor tool repairs. 
 
Qualifications & Experience
  • Education: Typically requires an ITI (Tool & Die Maker / Fitter) or a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Experience: 1–3 years of hands-on experience in a press shop or sheet metal tool room environment.
  • Physical Fitness: Ability to handle heavy tool components and work in shift operations. 
 
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
  • Reduction in tool-related downtime during production.
  • Accuracy of tool repairs to ensure zero-defect parts.
  • Timely completion of preventive maintenance schedules
