Job Description:
A Crane Operator in the steel industry safely manages overhead cranes to lift, move, and position heavy materials (steel coils, molten metal, scrap) using hoists, magnets, or buckets. Key duties include conducting daily safety inspections, coordinating with ground teams, and performing routine maintenance to ensure maximum production efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
- Crane Operation: Operate heavy overhead, gantry, or bridge cranes to transport raw materials and finished steel products.
- Load Management: Select, secure, and move materials using appropriate attachments like magnets, chains, or slings.
- Safety Inspections: Perform pre-operational checks on crane components, brakes, and safety devices before each shift.
- Communication: Coordinate movements with spotters and ground crews using radio or hand signals.
- Maintenance: Perform minor repairs, clean equipment, and report malfunctions to supervisors.
- Production Support: Feed furnaces, manage slag, and transport materials within the plant.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Experience: Previous experience (typically 1–2+ years) with industrial or overhead cranes in a heavy manufacturing environment.
- Technical Knowledge: Understanding of rigging techniques, crane capacities, and load stability.
- Certification: Valid crane operator license or certification (e.g., NCCCO or local equivalent) is generally required.
- Physical Condition: Good physical stamina for working in high-temperature, industrial environments.
- Attention to Detail: High alertness to ensure safety and precision.
Working Conditions
- High-temperature, noisy, and potentially dusty environments typical of steel mills.
- Shift work, including nights, weekends, and overtime.
Typical Salary and Benefits
- Salary Range: Approximately ₹2.16 LPA – ₹3.00 LPA in India, or 4500-6000 PLN/month in other regions
