A Melter - AOD (Argon Oxygen Decarburization) is a skilled industrial role responsible for operating furnaces to melt and refine metal, specifically within steel-making shops producing stainless and alloy steels. The primary duty is to manage the melting process to ensure the molten metal meets specific quality and composition standards before casting.
Job Description (JD) for a Melter - AOD
The job description for an AOD Melter typically includes the following duties and responsibilities:
Core Responsibilities:
- Operating or tending electric arc or oxygen furnaces, including AOD vessels, to melt and refine metal.
- Generating daily production reports and monthly performance summaries.
- Working with the quality and planning departments to ensure timely execution and adherence to steel specifications.
- Implementing and monitoring adherence to plant safety norms and serving on safety committees.
- Maintaining and inspecting spare parts inventory and incoming materials used in the process.
- Developing processes for different steel grades through the AOD furnace.
Key Duties:
- Heat Preparation & Execution: Responsible for the complete preparation and execution of heat cycles, ensuring the correct sequence of operations for melting.
- Composition Control: Controlling the metal's composition by adding refining agents, fluxes, and alloys, and adjusting electrical or oxygen parameters as needed to remove impurities and unwanted elements.
- Equipment Operation: Operating associated equipment, such as cranes, and performing minor preventive maintenance on furnaces and related machinery.
- Documentation: Maintaining accurate records and updating data within Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems to track production metrics and quality standards.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Experience: Typically requires 2-8 years of experience in a relevant metal manufacturing, foundry, or steel-making environment, with hands-on experience in AOD and potentially Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) or Ladle Refining Furnace (LRF) operations.
- Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of metallurgy, casting processes, and furnace operations.
- Work Environment: Ability to work in environments with extreme temperatures and dust.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to lift heavy materials and follow strict safety procedures.
