Position: Production Manager – Heavy Machinery Manufacturing

Location: [Plant Location]
Industry: Heavy Machinery / Capital Equipment / Industrial Manufacturing
Reporting To: Plant Head / Operations Head


Role Objective

The Production Manager is responsible for planning, coordinating, and controlling manufacturing processes to ensure efficient production of heavy machinery and equipment. The role focuses on achieving production targets, maintaining quality standards, optimizing resources, ensuring safety compliance, and driving continuous improvement initiatives.


Key Responsibilities

Production Planning & Control

  • Plan and execute daily, weekly, and monthly production schedules to meet delivery commitments.

  • Ensure optimal utilization of manpower, machines, and materials.

  • Coordinate with PPC, stores, and maintenance teams to avoid production bottlenecks.

Manufacturing Operations

  • Oversee fabrication, machining, welding, assembly, heat treatment, and finishing operations.

  • Ensure adherence to engineering drawings, process sheets, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).

  • Monitor production KPIs such as productivity, yield, cycle time, and rejection rates.

Quality & Process Improvement

  • Ensure compliance with quality standards (ISO, customer specifications, internal QC norms).

  • Analyze root causes of defects and implement corrective & preventive actions (CAPA).

  • Lead lean manufacturing, Kaizen, 5S, TPM, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead, mentor, and develop supervisors, engineers, and shop-floor workforce.

  • Conduct performance reviews, skill-gap assessments, and training programs.

  • Maintain high levels of discipline, motivation, and safety awareness.

Safety, Compliance & Cost Control

  • Ensure strict compliance with safety, health, and environmental (SHE) norms.

  • Implement cost-reduction initiatives related to material usage, scrap, rework, and energy.

  • Ensure compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements.

Cross-Functional Coordination

  • Work closely with Design, Quality, Maintenance, Supply Chain, and Dispatch teams.

  • Support new product development (NPD), trials, and process validations.

  • Handle customer audits and support management reviews.


Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • Achievement of production targets

  • Reduction in downtime, scrap, and rework

  • On-time delivery (OTD)

  • Manpower productivity

  • Safety performance (zero accidents)


Qualifications & Experience

Education:

  • B.E. / B.Tech / Diploma in Mechanical, Production, or Industrial Engineering

Experience:

  • 10–18 years of experience in heavy machinery / capital equipment manufacturing

  • Minimum 5 years in a managerial or leadership role


Skills & Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of fabrication, machining, welding, and assembly processes

  • Expertise in production planning, capacity utilization, and manpower management

  • Hands-on experience with Lean Manufacturing & TPM

  • Strong leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making skills

  • ERP/MRP system exposure (SAP preferred)

  • Good communication and stakeholder management skills


Preferred Background

  • Experience in industries such as construction equipment, mining machinery, steel plants, cement plant equipment, power plant equipment, or OEM heavy engineering companies
