Job Description:
The "Head of Mining" (or Mine Manager/General Manager) is a senior executive responsible for the complete management of a gold mine's operations, focusing on safety, production, strategic planning, financial performance, and regulatory compliance. 
 
Key Responsibilities
  • Safety and Environment (HSE): Champion the highest standards of health, safety, and environmental performance, ensuring all operations comply with internal policies and external statutory regulations (e.g., relevant Mining Acts and environmental standards).
  • Operational Management: Oversee all mining activities (surface and/or underground), including planning, execution, and coordination of daily operations to maximize safe production and efficiency.
  • Strategic Planning: Develop and execute the short-term and life-of-mine strategic plans, ensuring the optimal extraction of mineral resources while minimizing dilution and costs.
  • Financial Oversight: Manage and control operational (OPEX) and capital expenditure (CAPEX) budgets, ensuring alignment with financial plans and working with finance teams to drive profitability and cash flow.
  • Leadership and Team Management: Lead, mentor, and develop a cross-functional team including geology, engineering, processing, and maintenance departments, fostering a culture of high performance and teamwork.
  • Stakeholder Relations: Manage key internal and external relationships, including government authorities, local communities, contractors, and suppliers.
  • Technical Services Coordination: Coordinate with technical services teams (geology, mine planning, survey, geotechnical) to ensure robust plans and technical support are in place to achieve performance targets. 
 
Typical Qualifications
  • Education: A Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering or a related discipline is generally required, often supplemented by a Master's degree or a Mine Manager's Certificate of Competence.
  • Experience: Significant experience (typically 10-20 years) in the mining industry is necessary, with several years in senior leadership or management roles, including experience in both open-pit and/or underground environments.
  • Skills: Strong leadership, communication, problem-solving, decision-making, and financial acumen skills are essential. Proficiency with mine planning and design software is also typically required.
