Job Description:
The role of Head of Operations & Exploration for a Gold Mine is a senior executive position responsible for leading and managing all technical and operational aspects, from initial discovery and planning to daily production and safety. 
Key responsibilities include strategic planning, ensuring regulatory compliance, achieving production targets, managing significant budgets, and leading multi-disciplinary teams. 
 
Key Responsibilities
  • Strategic Leadership & Planning: Develop and execute strategic plans for both exploration and mining operations, aligning them with overall business goals to drive growth and profitability.
  • Operational Management: Oversee day-to-day mining operations, including drilling, blasting, excavation, and ore processing activities, to ensure efficiency and meet production targets.
  • Exploration Oversight: Lead the exploration function, which involves target generation, designing and managing drilling programs, and evaluating the economic feasibility of potential deposits to ensure resource replacement and growth.
  • Safety, Health, and Environment (HSE): Champion a strong safety culture and ensure the highest standards of safety, health, and environmental performance, strictly complying with all local and international regulations (e.g., DGMS, NI 43-101, JORC).
  • Compliance & Reporting: Ensure all operations and exploration activities comply with government regulations and company policies. Prepare and submit technical and financial reports to senior management, boards, and regulatory authorities.
  • Team & Stakeholder Management: Lead, mentor, and manage large, cross-functional teams (geologists, engineers, contractors, etc.). Manage relationships with external stakeholders, including government bodies, local communities, and vendors.
  • Financial & Budget Management: Develop, manage, and control operational and capital budgets (OPEX and CAPEX), implement cost-control measures, and optimize resource allocation. 
 
Required Qualifications and Skills
  • Education: A university degree in Mining Engineering or Geology is typically required, often supplemented by a Master's degree or professional certifications.
  • Experience: Significant experience (typically 15+ years) in the mining industry, including extensive senior management or mine manager experience in gold or metal mining operations.
  • Technical Expertise: Deep knowledge of modern mining methods (underground and/or open-pit), geology, mine planning software (e.g., GIS, Surpac), and mineral processing.
  • Leadership: Strong leadership, decision-making, and problem-solving skills, with a proven track record of leading large teams and driving performance.
  • Compliance Knowledge: Thorough understanding of relevant mining acts, regulations, and safety protocols is essential.
