Turbopump Engineer
Job Description:
About the Role: We are seeking a highly motivated and technically strong turbopump engineer to join our propulsion team. The selected candidate will be responsible for the design, analysis, testing, and optimization of high-speed turbopump systems used in liquid rocket engines. This role requires deep understanding of fluid dynamics, rotating machinery, cryogenic systems, and rocket propulsion fundamentals.
Key Responsibilities
1. Design & Development
● Design centrifugal and axial turbopumps for LOX, LH2, RP-1, or other propellants
● Perform hydraulic design including impeller, diffuser, inducer, and volute design
● Develop rotor dynamics models for high-speed rotating assemblies
● Optimize pump efficiency, cavitation margin, and pressure rise
2. Analysis & Simulation
● Conduct CFD analysis for flow behavior and cavitation prediction
● Perform FEA for structural integrity under high pressure and cryogenic conditions
● Conduct rotor dynamic analysis including critical speed, vibration, and stability
● Thermal analysis for cryogenic and high-temperature operation
3. Testing & Validation
● Plan and execute turbopump performance testing
● Develop test rigs and instrumentation setup
● Analyze test data for head, flow rate, efficiency, NPSH, and vibration
● Troubleshoot failures and recommend corrective actions
4. Integration & System Engineering
● Work closely with combustion chamber and engine teams for system integration
● Support engine hot-fire tests
● Ensure compatibility with feed system and propellant management systems
● Maintain compliance with aerospace safety and quality standards
5. Documentation & Compliance
● Prepare design reports, technical documentation, and review presentations
● Maintain configuration control and design revision tracking
● Support qualification and certification processes
Required Qualifications
● Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
● 2–6 years of experience in turbomachinery or rocket propulsion systems
● Strong understanding of fluid mechanics and thermodynamics
● Experience with CFD tools (ANSYS Fluent, CFX, Star-CCM+)
● Experience with FEA tools (ANSYS, Abaqus, Nastran)
● Knowledge of rotor dynamics and high-speed rotating machinery
● Understanding of cryogenic propellant handling
Preferred Skills
● Experience in liquid rocket engine turbopumps
● Knowledge of cavitation suppression techniques
● Familiarity with materials used in cryogenic and high-stress environments
● Experience in rocket engine hot-fire testing
● Understanding of aerospace quality standards
