CMM Quality Engineer
Job Description:
A CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) Quality Engineer specializing in Zeiss systems is responsible for ensuring manufactured components meet precise dimensional tolerances. Their core function involves programming, operating, and maintaining Zeiss CMM equipment, typically using Calypso software.
Key Responsibilities
- CMM Programming: Develop, debug, and run offline and online inspection programs using Zeiss Calypso software from 2D drawings and 3D CAD models (Model-Based Definition).
- Dimensional Inspection: Perform first-article, in-process, and final inspections of precision components to ensure compliance with engineering specifications.
- GD&T Interpretation: Apply extensive knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to interpret complex engineering drawings and set up measurement routines.
- Data Analysis & Reporting: Analyze measurement data, identify non-conformities, and generate detailed inspection reports. This often includes supporting PPAP (Production Part Approval Process) submissions.
- Maintenance & Calibration: Perform daily calibrations of CMM equipment and manage periodic maintenance schedules to ensure machine accuracy.
- Continuous Improvement: Collaborate with manufacturing teams to resolve quality issues, conduct MSA (Measurement Systems Analysis) such as Gage R&R studies, and optimize inspection cycle times.
Required Knowledge & Skills
- Software Proficiency: Expert-level knowledge of Zeiss Calypso is essential; experience with other software like PC-DMIS or Holos is often a plus.
- Technical Expertise: Strong grasp of metrology principles, surface plate setups, and the use of various manual measuring instruments (micrometers, vernier calipers, bore gauges).
- Hardware Knowledge: Familiarity with Zeiss machine models (e.g., Contura, Prismo) and various probing systems.
- Quality Standards: Understanding of ISO 9001, AS9100, or IATF 16949 standards depending on the industry (Aerospace, Medical, or Automotive).
Education & Experience
- Education: Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Mechanical, Manufacturing,
- Experience: Most roles require 2 to 5 years of hands-on experience in Zeiss CMM programming and operation
