Job Description:
A Production Manager for an Induction Furnace in a steel company directs steel melting shop (SMS) operations, including charging, melting, and casting to meet production targets. They optimize charge mix, power consumption, and refractory life while ensuring high-quality steel production and strict safety compliance, typically requiring 10-20 years of experience. 
 
 
Core Responsibilities
  • Furnace Operations Management: Oversee daily melting operations, charge mix, alloy additions, and tapping to produce steel at the required chemical composition and temperature.
  • Production Targets: Achieve daily/monthly production targets with optimum yield, minimized melting loss, and maximum furnace efficiency.
  • Quality Control: Ensure compliance with metallurgical standards, supervise CCM (Continuous Casting Machine) operations, and monitor quality control of input raw materials (sponge iron, scrap).
  • Maintenance Coordination: Collaborate with maintenance teams to ensure preventative and breakdown maintenance of induction furnaces and, if applicable, CCM and LRF (Ladle Refining Furnace).
  • Safety and Compliance: Enforce strict adherence to safety protocols (PPEs, safe handling), statutory requirements, and environmental standards.
  • Data Analysis and Reporting: Maintain detailed daily/monthly reports on production, energy consumption (kwh/ton), and key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Team Leadership: Lead and train shift engineers, operators, and refractory technicians, managing human resources to ensure maximum productivity. 
     
Requirements & Qualifications
  • Experience: Generally 10-20 years in the steel industry, specifically with Induction Furnace and Billet Casting (CCM).
  • Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of metallurgy, induction furnace power systems, and refractory life management.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or relevant field.
  • Skills: Proven ability in troubleshooting furnace operational issues, strong leadership, and proficiency in MIS/reporting. 
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
  • Power Consumption: kwh per ton of molten steel.
  • Melting Loss: Percentage of metal loss.
  • Refractory Life: Number of heats per lining.
  • Production Volume: Total tons produced.
  • Yield Percentage: Ratio of finished billet to raw material.
