Job Description:

A Logistics Head in a steel manufacturing company directs end-to-end supply chain operations, including raw material inbound (coal/iron ore) and finished steel (TMT/structurals) outbound logistics. Responsibilities include optimizing 3PL/fleet performance, managing ODC cargo, ensuring regulatory compliance, and driving cost-effective distribution using ERP/SAP systems.
Core Responsibilities
- Strategic Planning: Develop and execute logistics strategies to ensure timely delivery of raw materials to plants and finished steel products to customers.
- Transportation Management: Manage end-to-end logistics, including specialized handling of Over Dimensional Cargo (ODC) and heavy steel structures.
- Warehouse/Yard Operations: Oversee raw material storage and finished goods yard management to ensure inventory accuracy and safe loading.
- Cost Optimization: Negotiate contracts with transporters, rail authorities, and port authorities to reduce freight costs while maintaining service levels.
- Compliance & Safety: Ensure compliance with statutory regulations, such as RTO, pollution control, and safety protocols.
- Technology & Reporting: Implement SAP/ERP for tracking, scheduling, and generating MIS reports on freight utilization and fuel efficiency.
- Vendor Management: Manage third-party service providers (3PL) to ensure Service Level Agreements (SLAs) are met.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Logistics, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering; MBA is preferred.
- Experience: 20-25+ years of experience in logistics, with specific expertise in steel or heavy fabrication industries.
- Industry Knowledge: Strong understanding of steel manufacturing, raw material logistics (coal/iron ore), and heavy freight logistics.
- Skills: Strong leadership, analytical abilities, negotiation skills, and proficiency in ERP/SAP software.
Typical Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- On-Time Delivery: Percentage of deliveries made within the scheduled time.
- Logistics Cost Per Ton: Total logistics expenditure relative to volume shipped.
- Dispatch Turnaround Time: Speed of vehicle loading and dispatching.
- Inventory Turnover Ratio: Efficient movement of raw materials and finished goods.
