Job Description:
A Helper in a scrap processing company (also known as a Recycling Worker, Yard Helper, or General Laborer) plays a critical role in the manual handling, sorting, and processing of scrap materials to ensure efficient operations and a safe working environment. This entry-level role involves heavy lifting, sorting materials by type, and cleaning work areas.
Core Responsibilities
- Sorting & Segregation: Physically sort and separate recyclable materials, including steel, aluminum, copper, plastic, and paper, to ensure purity.
- Material Handling: Load and unload scrap materials from trucks, containers, or conveyor belts.
- Equipment Assistance: Assist operators by feeding machinery like bailers, grinders, compactors, or shredders.
- Housekeeping & Maintenance: Maintain cleanliness of the yard and work areas, including removing debris, clearing jams, and sweeping to maintain a safe environment.
- Safety Compliance: Comply with all safety regulations, including wearing required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as steel-toed boots.
- Inspection: Inspect materials for contaminants or non-recyclable substances.
- Assisting Team: Support other workers and operators with daily production tasks and project-based work.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Physical Stamina: Ability to stand for long periods, work in extreme temperatures (hot/cold), and lift heavy objects (often up to 50 lbs).
- Material Recognition: Basic ability to distinguish between different types of metal (e.g., ferrous vs. non-ferrous).
- Manual Dexterity: Strong hand-eye coordination for sorting and operating tools.
- Communication: Ability to follow instructions from supervisors and communicate with team members.
- Flexibility: Willingness to work varied shifts, including weekends and overtime.
- Experience: Previous experience in a scrap yard, construction, or manufacturing environment is preferred but not always required.
