Job Description:
A Poclain (Excavator) Operator in a scrap processing company is responsible for operating hydraulic heavy machinery to move, sort, and process scrap metal or bulk materials. This role requires high precision, safety awareness, and experience with various attachments to handle materials in a yard or production environment.
Key Job Responsibilities
- Material Handling: Safely operate the Poclain/excavator to load, unload, and move scrap metal from trailers, trucks, or rail cars, and move materials into processing machinery (shredders, balers).
- Sorting & Loading: Sort different types of metal scrap with precision and efficiency using attachments like magnets or grapples.
- Site Coordination: Work with the ground crew and truck drivers to manage, sort, and stack materials safely within the yard.
- Preventive Maintenance: Conduct daily pre-operational inspections, routine cleaning, and lubrication of the machine (greasing, fluid checks) to prevent breakdowns.
- Equipment Troubleshooting: Perform minor repairs, report mechanical issues, and address issues on-site.
- Documentation: Maintain daily logs of machine operations, fuel consumption, and working hours.
- Safety Adherence: Strict compliance with safety regulations, including PPE adherence and maintaining a clean work environment.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Experience: A minimum of 2–5 years of experience in operating hydraulic excavators/Poclain machines.
- Technical Knowledge: Proficiency in excavator controls and understanding of hydraulic systems, specifically experience with bucket and breaker attachments.
- Certification: Valid heavy equipment operator license or relevant certification.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to work long shifts (e.g., 10-hour days) in challenging weather conditions.
- Precision: Excellent hand-eye coordination for delicate or precise handling of heavy scrap.
Working Conditions
- Environment: Works in high-traffic scrap yards, recycling centers, or material processing facilities.
- Hours: Often requires long, sometimes irregular hours, including shift work.
- Safety Protocols: Strict adherence to safety protocols is mandatory due to the hazardous nature of scrap metal.
