Job Description:
A Senior Engineer or Assistant Manager in a steel manufacturing company is responsible for overseeing production processes, optimizing manufacturing efficiency, maintaining quality standards, and managing teams. This role bridging technical expertise with managerial leadership, focuses on reducing production costs, ensuring safety compliance, and implementing process improvements (e.g., Lean/Six Sigma) in areas like casting, rolling,
Key Responsibilities
- Production Planning & Control: Prepare and execute daily/weekly/monthly production schedules to meet customer orders while ensuring optimal machine utilization.
- Process Optimization: Analyze existing manufacturing processes (melting, casting, rolling) to improve efficiency, reduce waste, and increase yield.
- Quality Management: Implement quality control programs and ensure finished products meet technical standards (e.g., ISO, ASME) and customer specifications.
- Equipment & Maintenance Coordination: Collaborate with maintenance teams to ensure uptime of heavy machinery (e.g., blast furnaces, rollers) and manage breakdown repairs.
- Project Leadership & NPD: Lead New Product Development (NPD) projects, including trials, tooling development, and Part Approval Processes (PPAP/APQP).
- Safety & Compliance: Ensure adherence to safety protocols (e.g., lockout/tagout, EHS policies) and statutory norms.
- Team Leadership: Supervise, train, and motivate production engineers, technicians, and workers.
- Cost Control: Analyze production costs and implement initiatives to minimize scrap and reduce material consumption.
Required Skills & Competencies
- Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of metallurgy, steel-making processes, casting, heat treatment, and mechanical drawing (GD&T).
- Manufacturing Systems: Proficient in ERP systems (e.g., SAP) and CAD/CAM software.
- Analytical Skills: Ability to troubleshoot operational issues, conduct root cause analysis (RCA), and analyze OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness).
- Communication: Strong interpersonal skills to coordinate between production, maintenance, quality, and dispatch departments.
- Leadership: Experience in team management and developing standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Qualification & Experience
- Qualification: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy, or Production Engineering.
- Experience: Generally 6–10 years of experience in the steel, casting, or heavy forging industry.
- Preferred Skills: Exposure to Six Sigma, lean manufacturing, and project management tools
