Job Description:
A Transfer Chain Bed Operator is responsible for managing the automated or manual transfer of heavy materials—such as lumber, steel, or pipes—across conveyor systems (transfer chains) to different stages of a production line. This role ensures the efficient flow of materials while maintaining safety and machinery functionality.
Key Responsibilities
- Operating Chain Transfers: Controlling the chain conveyor systems, including starting, stopping, and adjusting speeds to move materials along the transfer bed.
- Material Positioning: Aligning, straightening, or loading materials (e.g., lumber packs, metal sections) onto the transfer chains and ensuring proper transfer between conveyor sections.
- Safety and Inspection: Monitoring operations for potential jams, malfunctions, or safety hazards, such as misaligned materials.
- Clearing Jams: Safely stopping machinery to clear material jams using tools like peaveys, poles, or pry bars.
- Preventative Maintenance: Lubricating chains and conveyors, cleaning debris from the bed, and performing routine inspections to ensure equipment is in good working order.
- Sorting and Routing: Following production schedules to sort materials by size, type, or destination.
- Communication: Coordinating with forklifts, loaders, and other station operators to ensure a continuous, safe flow of materials.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Mechanical Aptitude: Understanding of mechanical conveyor systems and basic troubleshooting abilities.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to work in industrial environments, potentially involving long periods of standing, lifting, and working in varied temperatures.
- Attention to Detail: Ability to monitor equipment gauges, detect malfunctions, and inspect materials for quality.
- Safety Consciousness: Knowledge of safe material handling practices, including lockout/tagout procedures.
- Technical Skill: Experience with or ability to learn PLC-controlled systems, levers, and control panels.
Typical Working Conditions
- High-noise industrial environments (sawmills, steel mills, manufacturing plants).
- Continuous operation, which may include shifts, weekends, and overtime.
- Indoor or outdoor work depending on the facility type.\\
