Job Description:
A 2nd Class Boiler Operator in a steel manufacturing company is responsible for the safe, efficient, and continuous operation of high-pressure steam boilers (such as AFBC, WHRB, or coal-fired) and auxiliary equipment to support production processes. They monitor boiler parameters, perform maintenance, and ensure compliance with the Indian Boiler Regulations (IBR).
Key Job Responsibilities
- Boiler Operation & Monitoring: Start up, shut down, and operate boilers, maintaining optimal water levels, steam pressure, temperature, and fuel-to-air ratios (FBC/WHRB/Coal-fired).
- Control Systems: Monitor boiler parameters via DCS (Distributed Control System) or manual controls.
- Maintenance & Inspection: Perform daily inspections and routine maintenance, including cleaning, lubrication, removing ash/clinker, and repairing minor boiler issues.
- Safety & Compliance: Adhere strictly to EHS (Environment, Health, and Safety) protocols, IBR regulations, and work permit systems.
- Water Treatment: Monitor feedwater and drum water quality, manage boiler blowdown, and ensure water treatment plants (DM/RO) are functioning.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate, detailed logs of operational data (fuel consumption, steam generation, water levels, pressure).
- Troubleshooting: Identify and report malfunctions (e.g., FD fan trip, tube leaks) to the shift in-charge or 1st Class Operator.
Required Qualifications
- Certification: Valid 2nd Class Boiler Attendant/Operator Certificate.
- Experience: 1-2 years of experience in high-pressure boiler operations, ideally within a steel plant, power plant, or heavy manufacturing environment.
- Education: ITI (Fitter/Turner) or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering is typically required.
- Technical Skills: Knowledge of combustion systems, ESP (Electrostatic Precipitators), ash handling, and WHRB (Waste Heat Recovery Boiler) operations.
Physical & Safety Requirements
- Physical Stamina: Ability to perform heavy manual work, including cleaning and inspection of hot zones.
- Safety Focus: Strict adherence to safety protocols, including the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Work Environment: Willingness to work in rotating shifts (24/7) in a heavy manufacturing environment.
Typical Working Environment
- Location: Usually within the power plant, captive power unit, or utilities section of a steel factory.
- Reporting To: 1st Class Boiler Operator or Assistant Manager (Power Plant).
