Job Description:
A Turbine Operator in a steel company (typically 39MW+ capacity) operates, monitors, and maintains steam turbines, generators, and auxiliary systems (lube oil, cooling towers, condensers) to provide consistent power to production. They ensure safe start-up/shutdown, manage loads, and perform troubleshooting to minimize downtime, often utilizing Distributed Control Systems (DCS).
Key Responsibilities and Duties
- Operational Control: Startup, shutdown, and synchronization of steam turbine-generator (TG) units with the power grid or captive plant.
- Monitoring & Optimization: Continuously monitor critical parameters such as steam pressure, temperature, RPM, lube oil pressure, and vibration using DCS or field instruments to maintain optimal performance.
- Auxiliary Systems: Manage supporting equipment including cooling towers, condensers, feed pumps, and gland sealing systems.
- Maintenance & Troubleshooting: Perform regular field rounds to inspect equipment, detect leaks, abnormal sounds, or vibration, and carry out routine preventative maintenance (lubrication, cleaning).
- Safety Compliance: Ensure strict adherence to safety protocols, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and environmental regulations.
Requirements
- Experience: Generally requires 3-8+ years of experience in power-based combined cycle co-generation power plants, specifically with steam turbines.
- Technical Skills: Strong understanding of turbine systems, DCS, and troubleshooting of 39MW+ units.
- Education: Typically ITI, Diploma, or B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering.
- Physical Ability: Ability to perform field work and work in rotating shifts.
