Job Description:
A Silo Operator in the Coal Handling Plant (CHP) and Ash Handling Plant (AHP) for a steel company is responsible for managing the storage, transfer, and handling of raw materials (coal) and byproducts (ash) in bulk within silos. This role ensures a continuous, safe, and efficient flow of fuel to the furnaces/boilers and efficient disposal of ash.
Core Responsibilities
- Silo Management: Monitor and control loading/unloading levels of raw coal, pulverized coal, or fly ash in silos to maintain required inventory.
- System Operation: Operate PLC/DCS controlled systems for conveying, crushing, and distributing coal to bunkers.
- Ash Handling (AHP): Oversee vacuum or pressure systems to evacuate ash from Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP) hoppers and transfer it to storage silos.
- Flow Assurance: Prevent blockages or "bridging" within the silo to ensure consistent material discharge.
- Fuel Quality Management: Ensure dry coal is fed to bunkers, especially during rainy seasons, using stockpile management techniques.
- Maintenance & Inspection: Conduct routine inspections of silo structure, conveyors, vibrators, and discharge gates. Perform basic maintenance and troubleshoot equipment.
- Safety & Compliance: Strict adherence to safety regulations, including Local Operation Technical Order (LOTO) and Permit to Work (PTW) systems.
- Reporting: Maintain logs of plant operation parameters, including bunker levels and ash evacuation status.
Key Skills & Requirements
- Technical Knowledge: Familiarity with hydraulic systems, conveyor belts, crushers, and PLC-based control panels.
- Experience: Previous experience in a steel plant, captive power plant, or mineral processing facility (typically 2–5 years).
- Safety Conscious: Proficient in safety protocols (PPE, LOTO).
- Education: ITI or Diploma in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering is often required.
Physical Demands
- Ability to work in dusty, noisy environments.
- Physical stamina for conducting field inspections and working at heights.
Coordination
- Coordinate with the Control Room Operator to manage bunker/silo levels.
- Coordinate with the maintenance team for preventative and breakdown maintenance.
