Job Description:
A Control & Instrumentation (C&I) Technician in a steel company is responsible for the installation, calibration, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of industrial measurement and control devices. They ensure that high-temperature, automated production processes—including pressure, temperature, flow, and level monitoring systems—function accurately and safely.
Core Responsibilities
- Maintenance & Calibration: Perform routine maintenance, calibration, and repair of field instruments, including sensors, transmitters (ABB, Honeywell, Rosemount), and control valves.
- Troubleshooting: Diagnose and fix issues in Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC).
- System Upgrades: Install and commission new control systems, instruments, and automation upgrades.
- Safety Compliance: Ensure all instruments function safely, following PPE protocols and working in high-temperature or hazardous environments.
- Technical Documentation: Maintain records of calibration, maintenance activities, and loop checks.
- Support & Shutdown: Assist with plant startups, shutdowns, and major overhauls.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Education: ITI (Electrical/Instrumentation), Diploma (Preferred), or Associate Degree in relevant field.
- Experience: Generally 3+ years in instrumentation maintenance within heavy industry, such as steel, power plants, or petrochemicals.
- Technical Knowledge: Proficiency in PLC troubleshooting, SCADA, DCS systems, and PID controllers.
- System Knowledge: Experience working with pneumatics, hydraulics, flow meters, and temperature sensors.
- Documentation: Ability to interpret P&ID diagrams, electrical schematics, and wiring diagrams.
- Physical Ability: Ability to work in challenging industrial conditions (heat, dust) and work in shifts.
Typical Qualifications & Specializations
- Specific Experience: Knowledge of ferro-alloy plants, coke ovens, or blast furnace instruments is highly valued in the steel industry.
- Soft Skills: Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and ability to work under pressure during equipment breakdowns.
- Certifications: Safety training or specific DCS/PLC vendor certifications (Siemens, ABB) are often preferred.
Working Conditions
- The role involves working in a steel manufacturing plant (heavy engineering environment).
- Technicians must respond to immediate equipment breakdowns, which may require overtime or rotational shift work
