Job Description:
An Ophthalmic Technician in a hospital setting prepares patients for exams, performs complex diagnostic testing (OCT, tonometry, fundus photography), assists with minor surgeries, and manages electronic medical records (EMR). They work closely with ophthalmologists to manage patient flow, ensure sterile environments, and educate patients, typically requiring a high school diploma, COA/COT certification, and strong communication skills. 
Key Responsibilities
  • Patient Care & Assessment: Take detailed ocular and systemic histories, measure visual acuity, perform lensometry, applanation tonometry, and pupillary assessments.
  • Diagnostic Testing: Perform advanced imaging including [Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)], fundus photography, and visual fields.
  • Surgical Assistance: Assist with in-office procedures and surgeries, including setting up sterile fields, administering medications, and ensuring proper patient consent.
  • Administrative & Flow Management: Review charts for completeness, enter data into EHR/EMR, manage patient flow, and maintain, calibrate, and clean diagnostic equipment.
  • Patient Education: Instruct patients on eye care, medication usage, and pre-operative/post-operative care. 
    Job Requirements
  • Education: High school diploma, with a diploma in ophthalmic technology or equivalent training preferred.
  • Certification: Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) is strongly preferred or required.
  • Skills: Proficiency in [ophthalmic equipment], strong attention to detail, excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Physical: Ability to stand/walk for long periods, manual dexterity to operate equipment. 
    Typical Hospital Setting Demands
  • Interaction with a multidisciplinary team (nurses, physicians, admin).
  • High-volume patient throughput.
  • Compliance with strict safety and infection control protocols
