Job Description:
A Pathology Lab Technician in a hospital collects, processes, and analyzes patient samples (blood, tissue, fluids) to assist doctors in diagnosing diseases. They operate automated lab equipment, perform tests in hematology, microbiology, and chemistry, maintain quality control standards, and manage data within the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
Key Responsibilities & Duties
- Sample Management: Collecting, receiving, labeling, and processing blood, tissue, and fluid specimens while ensuring sample integrity.
- Testing and Analysis: Performing routine and specialized laboratory tests (e.g., blood chemistry, cell counts, microbiological screenings).
- Equipment Maintenance: Calibrating, operating, troubleshooting, and cleaning complex laboratory equipment and analyzers.
- Quality Control (QC): Executing rigorous quality control protocols to validate test results and ensuring compliance with safety standards (e.g., OSHA, biohazard management).
- Reporting: Recording data accurately and delivering results to pathologists and healthcare providers, often using LIS.
- Preparation: Assisting in preparing specimens for microscopic examination by pathologists.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Education: A diploma or associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) or related field.
- Certification: Certification by a professional organization (e.g., ASCP) is generally required or preferred.
- Experience: Previous experience in a clinical laboratory setting is preferred.
- Skills: Proficiency in using laboratory equipment, strong attention to detail, knowledge of medical terminology, and good computer skills for managing laboratory information systems.

- Location: Primarily hospital laboratories, clinics, and diagnostic centers.
- Environment: Fast-paced environment requiring strict adherence to hygiene, safety, and infection control procedures.
