Job Description:
A Rigger in a steel company ensures the safe lifting, moving, and positioning of heavy structural steel and machinery using cranes, winches, and lifting tackle. Key duties include inspecting gear, calculating load weights, attaching loads securely, and signaling crane operators, often working at heights. They must adhere to OSHA standards.
Key Job Responsibilities
- Load Assessment: Calculating weight and determining the center of gravity for heavy steel components to ensure stability.
- Rigging Operations: Selecting and attaching appropriate slings, chains, cables, and shackles to loads.
- Signaling & Communication: Directing crane operators through hand signals or radio to move loads safely.
- Equipment Inspection: Daily inspection of rigging gear (chains, ropes, pulleys) for wear or damage before use.
- Structural Assembly: Assisting in erecting steel frameworks, aligning bolt holes with drift pins, and securing members.
- Safety Compliance: Ensuring all operations adhere strictly to safety protocols (e.g., OSHA,, for example, the guidelines found in this RRB Bengaluru notification) to prevent accidents.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Experience: Generally 2–8 years of experience, preferably in heavy industrial or steel construction environments.
- Certification: NCCCO rigger certification is often required.
- Technical Knowledge: Understanding of load distribution, knots, splicing, and basic physics (mass/weight).
- Physical Ability: Capable of working at heights, in confined spaces, and in harsh weather conditions.
- Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Common Qualifications/Physical Requirements
- High-level math skills to calculate load weights.
- Ability to work in noisy, high-temperature environments.
- Strong verbal communication for coordination with team members.
