Job Description:
An Instrument Technician in a power plant is responsible for the installation, calibration, maintenance, and repair of the intricate control systems, sensors, and monitoring devices that ensure safe and efficient operation. They work with pneumatic, electronic, and hydraulic instruments that measure and control variables such as pressure, temperature, flow, and level. 
 
Key Responsibilities
  • Calibration & Testing: Calibrate field instruments (transmitters, control valves, analyzers) to maintain accuracy and reliability.
  • Troubleshooting & Repair: Diagnose and resolve malfunctions in field instruments, control systems, and automation equipment, including Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs).
  • Preventive/Predictive Maintenance: Perform scheduled checks, cleaning, and repairs on critical equipment to prevent plant outages.
  • Installation & Commissioning: Install new instruments, run tubing/cabling, and perform loop checks during plant upgrades or new construction.
  • Documentation & Compliance: Maintain accurate records of calibration data and repair history, ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and statutory regulations.
  • Collaboration: Coordinate with operations, electrical, and mechanical teams during plant startups, shutdowns, and turnarounds. 
     
Typical Requirements
  • Education: A Diploma in Instrumentation, Electronics, or Electrical Engineering, or an ITI certification with relevant experience.
  • Experience: Usually 5 years of industrial experience, specifically in power generation, petrochemical, or similar process industries.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficiency with HART communicators, multimeters, and loop calibrators.
    • Strong knowledge of control systems (DCS, PLC, SCADA).
    • Ability to read P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams) and wiring schematics.
  • Physical Ability: Ability to work in confined spaces, climb ladders, and lift heavy equipment, often while wearing PPE. 
     
Common Skills
  • Analytical Troubleshooting: Ability to diagnose complex problems in high-pressure environments.
  • Safety Conscious: Strict adherence to safety protocols (e.g., Lockout/Tagout, PPE).
  • Communication: Effective written and verbal communication for reporting and documentation.
