Job Description:
A Safety Officer in a steel pipe manufacturing unit ensures a "Zero Harm" environment by developing, enforcing, and auditing occupational health and safety (OHS) policies. Key responsibilities include conducting hazard identification (HIRA) and Job Safety Analysis (JSA) for heavy machinery, hot work, and welding processes, while managing emergency preparedness and ensuring regulatory compliance (e.g., OSHA, Factories Act).
Core Responsibilities and Duties
- Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment: Perform daily shop floor inspections to identify and mitigate risks related to heavy machinery, crane operations, welding, and high-temperature processes.
- Safety Compliance & Regulations: Ensure adherence to statutory regulations, including the Factories Act and ISO standards (e.g., 14001/45001).
- Incident Investigation: Investigate accidents, near-misses, and occupational illnesses to determine root causes and implement corrective/preventive actions.
- Training & Safety Culture: Conduct safety orientations, toolbox talks, and fire safety/emergency response training for employees and contractors.
- PPE Management: Enforce the correct usage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and manage its availability through coordination with procurement.
- Documentation: Maintain detailed logs of audits, inspections, training, and compliance records.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Education: Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Engineering (Mechanical/Electrical) or Science.
- Certifications: Advanced Diploma in Industrial Safety (ADIS) or equivalent certifications (e.g., OSHA 30-Hour).
- Experience: 3-5 years of experience, ideally in steel manufacturing or heavy engineering.
- Skills: Strong knowledge of Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA), legal compliance, and emergency response planning.
Key Focus Areas in Pipe Manufacturing
- Hot Work & Welding: Managing risks associated with high heat and fumes.
- Heavy Machinery: Ensuring safety guardrails, lockout-tagout (LOTO) procedures, and safe operation of lifting equipment/cranes.
- Material Handling: Safe handling of large steel pipes and raw materials.
