Job Description:
A Furnace Supervisor in steel manufacturing (typically Induction, Electric Arc, or Ladle Furnaces) oversees daily melting operations, ensuring high-quality steel production, safety compliance, and production efficiency. They lead crew members, manage raw material charging, control tap-to-tap times, and coordinate equipment maintenance to maximize yield.
Key Responsibilities
- Production Management: Oversee shift-wise operations, including charging, melting, alloying, and tapping to meet daily production targets.
- Operational Control: Monitor furnace parameters (temperature, vacuum levels) and control energy consumption to ensure efficient operations.
- Safety & Compliance: Enforce strict adherence to safety protocols (PPE, EHS), especially around molten metal, to ensure a zero-accident workplace.
- Quality Assurance: Monitor spectrometer samples to ensure chemical composition matches grade specifications.
- Team Leadership: Supervise, train, and schedule furnace operators and crew members.
- Maintenance Coordination: Collaborate with maintenance teams for preventive maintenance and troubleshoot equipment, such as refractory lining damage.
Key Qualifications
- Experience: Generally 10-15 years of experience in a Steel Melting Shop (SMS), specifically with induction or electric arc furnaces.
- Education: Typically a Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering, or Production Engineering.
- Technical Skills: Knowledge of refractory management, ladle preparation, and troubleshooting electrical/mechanical issues.
- Attributes: Strong leadership, decision-making, and communication skills for working in high-pressure, hot-strip, or shift-based environments.
