Job Description:
A Sponge Yard Supervisor in a Steel Melting Shop (SMS) manages the storage, handling, and quality of sponge iron (DRI) and raw materials before they are fed into the induction furnace or electric arc furnace (EAF). They ensure efficient material supply to maintain uninterrupted steel production.

Position Summary:
Oversee daily sponge yard operations, focusing on the proper storage, blending, and timely feeding of sponge iron and associated raw materials to the SMS furnaces.

Key Responsibilities:
- Inventory Management: Track receipt, inventory levels, and consumption of raw materials, including sponge iron, scrap, and ferroalloys.
- Material Handling: Supervise the unloading, stocking, and transportation of raw materials from the yard to the furnace area.
- Quality Inspection: Monitor the physical quality of incoming sponge iron and ensure traceability of products based on grade.
- Charge Mix Preparation: Assist in calculating and preparing the charge mix (ratio of sponge iron/scrap) for furnace charging.
- Safety & Maintenance: Ensure safe stacking, clean yard conditions, and maintenance of machinery such as loaders, cranes, and conveyors.
- Operational Coordination: Coordinate with furnace operators to maintain required material supply in the bins.
Requirements:
- Experience: 3–8 years of experience in raw material management within a steel plant or scrap yard.
- Education: Diploma in Mechanical/Metallurgy or ITI with relevant experience.
- Skills: Knowledge of iron ore/coal/sponge iron properties, crane operations, and inventory management software (ERP).
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):
- Reduction in material handling losses and contamination.
- Uninterrupted supply to furnace/CCM.
- Inventory accuracy.
Typical Work Environment:
- Requires working in shifts.
- Heavy engineering environment, often involving hazardous material handling and outdoor work.
