Job Description:
A 1st Class Boiler Operator in a steel pipes manufacturing plant safely manages, monitors, and maintains high-pressure boilers and auxiliary equipment. Their primary objective is to ensure continuous, reliable steam generation needed for steel heating and processing operations while strictly adhering to safety, efficiency, and statutory IBR (Indian Boiler Regulations) standards.
Key Responsibilities
1. Boiler Operations & Control
- Start up, operate, and shut down high-pressure boilers (e.g., AFBC, WHRB, or Coal/Oil-fired boilers).
- Monitor and regulate steam pressure, temperature, water levels, and fuel feed rates to optimize combustion and thermal efficiency.
- Operate boiler controls either manually or via DCS (Distributed Control Systems) / PLC interfaces.
- Manage auxiliary equipment such as boiler feed pumps, draft fans, air compressors, and de-aerators.
2. Water Treatment & Chemical Management
- Monitor and manage the boiler feed water system, including softeners and demineralization (DM) plants.
- Conduct regular chemical tests (e.g., pH, hardness, dissolved oxygen) and adjust chemical dosing to prevent corrosion and scale buildup.
- Perform routine and blowdown operations to manage total dissolved solids (TDS) within the boiler drum.
3. Maintenance & Troubleshooting
- Perform preventative maintenance (PM) and corrective tasks on valves, gauges, fuel nozzles, piping, and soot blowers.
- Diagnose faults in the boiler and auxiliary systems, rectifying minor issues and escalating major defects.
- Inspect combustion chambers, draft systems, and ash handling systems to prevent blockages and reduce downtime.
4. Safety & Compliance
- Possess and maintain a valid 1st Class Boiler Attendant Certificate as required by local jurisdiction and the Indian Boiler Regulations (IBR).
- Ensure all operations, pressure vessels, and safety valves comply with IBR guidelines and plant safety protocols.
- Respond quickly and correctly to emergency situations (e.g., sudden pressure drops, flame failures, or low water cut-offs) to prevent accidents.
5. Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain accurate logbooks and shift records for boiler parameters, fuel consumption, and water quality.
- Report any anomalies or equipment malfunctions to the shift supervisor or maintenance engineering team.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Education/Certification: Valid 1st Class Boiler Operator/Attendant Certificate of Competency.
- Experience: 15 to 20 years of hands-on experience operating high-pressure, heavy-duty boilers in a heavy industrial setting (steel plants, power plants, or pipe manufacturing).
- Technical Skills: Sound knowledge of IBR regulations, DCS/SCADA controls, combustion engineering, and water chemistry.
- Physical & Soft Skills: Ability to work in noisy, high-temperature environments, strong troubleshooting skills, and the ability to work in rotating shifts.
