Job Description:
A Laboratory Head of Department (HOD) for a coal washery oversees all lab operations, ensuring accurate testing of raw, washed, and reject coal samples. Their primary goal is to optimize processing efficiency, maintain strict product quality, guarantee regulatory compliance, and manage the laboratory team.
Here is a detailed, structured job description for the role:
Key Responsibilities
1. Quality Management & Testing Oversight
- Oversee and manage the end-to-end process of sampling, sample preparation, and rigorous testing of raw coal, washed coal, and washery rejects.
- Supervise advanced coal testing methodologies, including Proximate Analysis (moisture, ash, volatile matter, and fixed carbon) and Ultimate Analysis (carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, sulfur, and oxygen).
- Conduct Gross Calorific Value (GCV) tests to evaluate the thermal efficiency and grade of the coal.
2. Process Optimization
- Analyze lab data to monitor and optimize washery performance (e.g., yield and separation efficiency).
- Provide actionable, timely data to the production and operations teams to adjust machinery/processes based on varying coal qualities.
3. Equipment Management & Calibration
- Ensure all laboratory equipment and analytical instruments are properly calibrated, maintained, and functioning according to industry standards.
- Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and coordinate with technicians for repairs or upgrades.
4. Safety & Compliance
- Enforce rigorous health and safety protocols within the laboratory (handling chemicals, reagents, and maintaining a hazard-free environment).
- Ensure all laboratory operations comply with local, state, and national environmental and regulatory standards.
5. Team Leadership & Reporting
- Manage, train, and mentor laboratory staff, including chemists, technicians, and helpers.
- Generate and verify accurate daily, weekly, and monthly analytical reports for management and stakeholders.
Key Qualifications & Requirements
- Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Experience: Typically 20 to 25 years of progressive laboratory experience, with a strong preference for 5+ years in a supervisory or managerial role within a coal washery, coal-fired power plant, or mineral processing facility.
- Technical Skills: Deep understanding of coal testing standards (e.g., ASTM, ISO, IS standards), laboratory information management systems (LIMS), and washery process controls.
- Soft Skills: Strong leadership, analytical thinking, excellent problem-solving abilities, and meticulous attention to detail.
