Position: Senior Instrumentation & Automation Engineer (PLC / SCADA)

Department: Engineering / Automation
Reporting To: Automation Manager / Engineering Manager
Location: Plant / Project-based

Job Summary

The Senior Instrumentation & Automation Engineer will lead, design, and support advanced industrial automation and instrumentation systems across manufacturing and process environments. This role requires deep expertise in Siemens and Rockwell PLC platforms, SCADA systems, industrial communication networks, and modern digital technologies including IIoT and virtualization. The position involves technical leadership, mentoring junior engineers, and driving automation reliability, safety, and standardization initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Automation & PLC Systems (Senior-Level Ownership)

• Lead architecture, design, programming, and commissioning of PLC-based control systems using:
• Siemens (S7-300/400/1200/1500, TIA Portal)
• Rockwell / Allen Bradley (ControlLogix, CompactLogix, Studio 5000)
• Develop and review complex control philosophies, interlocks, sequencing, batching, and safety logic.
• Act as technical authority for PLC standards, libraries, version control, and best practices.
• Support and troubleshoot critical plant automation issues with minimal downtime.

Instrumentation Engineering

• Provide expert guidance on selection, application, calibration, and maintenance of industrial instruments:
• Pressure, temperature, flow, level, analytical systems
• Review and approve P&IDs, loop diagrams, wiring diagrams, and I/O lists.
• Lead instrumentation troubleshooting during breakdowns, shutdowns, and startup activities.

SCADA / HMI & Data Systems

• Lead design, development, and maintenance of enterprise and plant-level SCADA systems using:
• Ignition SCADA
• Rockwell FactoryTalk View (SE/ME)
• Siemens WinCC / WinCC Unified
• Wonderware / AVEVA System Platform
• Design advanced alarm management, trends, reports, dashboards, and historian architectures.
• Ensure SCADA performance, redundancy, cybersecurity, and long-term maintainability.

Industrial Communication & Networking

• Architect and troubleshoot industrial communication protocols, including:
• Profinet, Profibus
• Ethernet/IP
• Modbus TCP/RTU
• OPC UA / OPC DA
• Design and maintain industrial Ethernet networks, managed switches, VLANs, and redundancy topologies (MRP, RSTP, DLR).
• Coordinate with IT teams on IT/OT integration and cybersecurity alignment.

IIoT, Digitalization & Advanced Systems

• Lead or support Industrial IoT (IIoT) initiatives, edge computing, and OT data integration.
• Interface automation systems with MES, ERP, cloud platforms, and analytics tools.
• Support predictive maintenance, energy monitoring, and advanced visualization solutions.

IT / OT Infrastructure & Virtualization

• Provide technical leadership for industrial servers, PCs, and control-room hardware.
• Strong working knowledge of:
• Windows Server and Client OS
• Virtualization platforms (VMware, Hyper‑V)
• Ensure system backups, disaster recovery, antivirus, patching, and OT hardening policies.

Standards, Safety & Compliance

• Implement and enforce industrial automation standards, engineering best practices, and safety guidelines.
• Provide guidance on functional safety concepts (SIL, safety PLCs) where applicable.
• Support audits, MOCs, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Leadership & Mentoring

• Mentor and technically guide junior and mid-level engineers.
• Review engineering designs, code, and documentation.
• Coordinate with operations, maintenance, OEMs, and system integrators.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Instrumentation / Electronics / Electrical / Automation Engineering
• 8–15 years of progressive experience in industrial automation and instrumentation roles

Mandatory Technical Skills

• Advanced Siemens and Rockwell PLC programming
• SCADA systems: Ignition, FactoryTalk, WinCC, Wonderware
• Industrial networking and communication protocols
• Instrumentation design and troubleshooting
• IT/OT systems, servers, and virtualization

Preferred Skills

• Experience in large manufacturing or process industries
• Exposure to safety systems and advanced diagnostics
• MES / historian integration experience
• Basic scripting or programming for automation and data applications

Soft Skills & Competencies

• Strong problem-solving and decision-making ability
• Excellent documentation and communication skills
• Ability to lead automation initiatives independently
• Strong collaboration with cross-functional teams
