Job Description:
The Assistant Manager of Process (SID) oversees daily sponge iron production. They optimize kiln parameters, manage raw materials, reduce waste, and ensure safety standards to meet quality and cost targets. [1]
Key Responsibilities
Production & Process Control
  • Monitor Kiln Operations: Direct daily operation of DRI kilns, coolers, and coal injection systems.
  • Optimize Parameters: Adjust temperature profiles, kiln speed, and air-to-fuel ratios for maximum yield.
  • Control Quality: Ensure the chemical composition (metallic iron, carbon content) meets steel melting shop standards.
  • Troubleshoot Issues: Resolve process deviations like accretion formation, ring formation, or shifting temperature zones. [1]
Resource & Efficiency Management
  • Material Handling: Monitor consumption of iron ore, coal, and dolomite to reduce waste.
  • Energy Conservation: Optimize Waste Heat Recovery Boiler (WHRB) utilization from kiln exhaust gases.
  • Inventory Tracking: Collaborate with stores to ensure steady raw material supply and product dispatch.
Maintenance & Safety
  • Plan Shutdowns: Coordinate preventive maintenance for kilns, refractories, and heavy machinery.
  • Ensure Compliance: Enforce safety protocols, environmental regulations, and zero-accident targets on the shop floor.
  • Lead Teams: Supervise shift engineers, technicians, and contract laborers to maintain high productivity.
Qualifications and Skills
Education & Experience
  • Degree: B.E. / B.Tech in Metallurgy, Chemical, or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Experience: 5 to 10 years of operational experience in a rotary kiln-based DRI/Sponge Iron plant. [1, 2, 3]
Technical & Soft Skills
  • Core Knowledge: Deep understanding of reduction reactions, refractory materials, and kiln thermodynamics.
  • Software: Familiarity with SAP (PP/MM modules), SCADA, and PLC automation systems.
  • Leadership: Strong problem-solving, shift management, and communication skills.
