Job Description:
A Manager of Mechanical Maintenance for a pollution control steel plant leads the upkeep of heavy-duty air quality and exhaust systems. They develop preventive maintenance schedules, ensure equipment reliability to meet environmental regulations, and supervise a technical team to minimize system downtime. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Key Responsibilities
  • Equipment Maintenance & Troubleshooting:
    • Lead mechanical maintenance for heavy industrial pollution control systems, including Electrostatic Precipitators (ESP), baghouse filters, scrubber systems, gas cleaning plants, and industrial ID/FD fans.
    • Diagnose mechanical faults, conduct root cause analysis (RCA) on major equipment failures, and implement solutions to prevent reoccurrence.
    • Plan and execute major overhauls and shutdowns in coordination with production and safety teams. [1, 2, 3, 4]
  • Compliance & Environmental Control:
    • Ensure all mechanical components of pollution abatement equipment operate efficiently to meet strict statutory and environmental emission norms.
    • Monitor performance metrics of pollution control systems to align with plant sustainability targets. [1, 2]
  • Team Leadership & Strategy:
    • Manage, train, and mentor maintenance engineers and technicians, assigning shifts and evaluating performance.
    • Transition maintenance strategy from reactive repairs to predictive and preventive maintenance. [1]
  • Inventory & Budget Management:
    • Forecast and control the department's operational budget.
    • Manage spare parts inventory and procurement for critical mechanical components, ensuring optimal availability to prevent delays. [1, 2, 3]
  • Safety & Standards:
    • Ensure 100% compliance with plant safety protocols, such as Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) and Work Permits.
    • Identify potential mechanical hazards and implement mitigation plans. [1, 2, 3]
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree (B.E./B.Tech) in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field. [1, 2]
  • Experience: Typically 10 to 15 years of progressive mechanical maintenance experience in heavy process industries like steel manufacturing, DRI, or metallurgical plants. [1, 2, 3]
  • Technical Skills: Deep understanding of heavy rotating equipment, high-capacity blowers/fans, hydraulic/pneumatic systems, and material handling equipment. [1, 2, 3]
  • Software: Proficiency in Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) or SAP PM.
