Job Description:
A Millwright Fitter in a steel plant is responsible for the installation, precise alignment, maintenance, and heavy repair of industrial machinery. They are critical to preventing costly production downtime by troubleshooting mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic equipment, as well as rigging and overhauling heavy mill components. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Key Responsibilities
- Installation & Assembly: Assemble, align, and install heavy machinery, conveyors, motors, gearboxes, and pumps according to technical blueprints and layouts. [1, 2]
- Preventive & Breakdown Maintenance: Conduct routine inspections, dismantle defective parts, and repair or replace components like bearings, seals, shafts, and couplings. [1]
- Machinery Alignment: Perform precision alignment (using dial indicators, laser alignment) of rotating equipment to prevent vibrations and excessive wear. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
- Heavy Rigging: Safely lift, hoist, and move large, heavy industrial parts using cranes, hoists, and rigging gear. [1, 2]
- Fabrication & Fitting: Custom fabricate or modify parts through bench fitting, welding, grinding, and operating basic machine tools (lathes, milling machines) if replacements are unavailable. [1, 2]
- Troubleshooting: Diagnose malfunctions by observing machines in operation and listening for unusual sounds to pinpoint mechanical or hydraulic failures. [1]
Essential Requirements
- Education & Training: ITI or Diploma in Millwright Fitter, Machinist, or Mechanical trade.
- Experience: 3 to 5 years of proven experience in heavy industrial environments, particularly in large machine shops or continuous process steel, cement, or power plants.
- Technical Skills: Strong ability to read and interpret machine drawings and schematics. Proficient use of precision measuring tools (micrometers, vernier calipers).
- Safety Compliance: Adherence to stringent industrial safety protocols (e.g., LOTO - Lockout/Tagout, confined space entry, and proper PPE use).
- Physical Fitness: Ability to perform physically demanding work, lift heavy weights, and work in elevated or confined high-heat spaces. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Typical Working Conditions
- Work environments can be noisy, high-temperature, and hazardous.
- Shifts often rotate (including nights, weekends, and on-call for emergency plant breakdowns).
