Oxy-Fuel Operator
Job Description:
A Messer Oxyfuel Machine Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining oxy-fuel cutting machines to cut or shape metal workpieces with precision, while ensuring safety and efficiency. This role is hands-on, requires technical skill, and is common in industries like fabrication, shipbuilding, and heavy machinery manufacturing.
Key Job Responsibilities
- Machine setup: Prepare oxy-fuel cutting equipment, adjust torch settings, and ensure proper alignment of workpieces.
- Metal cutting: Operate the torch to cut mild steel, high-tensile steel, carbon alloys, and other metals into required shapes and profiles.
- Inspection: Check machine condition, gauges, and cut quality; perform routine maintenance.
- Safety compliance: Follow workplace safety standards, handle gases carefully, and use protective gear.
- Team coordination: Work with co-workers to maintain efficiency and meet production targets.
Skills & Qualifications
- Technical knowledge of oxy-fuel cutting processes and metallurgy.
- Attention to detail for precise cuts and quality assurance.
- Ability to read technical manuals and follow instructions.
- Physical stamina for repetitive tasks and handling heavy materials.
- No formal degree required; most operators learn through vocational training or on-the-job experience.
Risks & Challenges
- Exposure to high heat and gases → requires strict adherence to safety protocols.
- Repetitive tasks → can be physically demanding.
- Precision requirement → mistakes can waste material and increase costs.
- Technical Training: ITI Diploma, vocational certification, or equivalent in welding, fabrication, or sheet metal work is preferred.
- Experience: Minimum 3–10 years of proven experience operating manual oxy-fuel torches or CNC gas-cutting machinery.
- Gas Knowledge: Deep familiarity with handling oxygen, acetylene, and propane safely.
