Job Description:
The First Aider acts as the primary responder to all workplace medical incidents. This role requires assessing emergency situations calmly, administering immediate basic medical care within the boundaries of training, and coordinating with professional emergency services to guarantee the health and safety of all employees and visitors. 
Key Responsibilities & Duties
Emergency Response & Patient Care
  • Assess the scene: Evaluate incident environments immediately for safety hazards before approaching casualties. 
  • Administer life support: Perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and operate an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) when required.
  • Treat acute injuries: Manage localized wounds, control severe bleeding, stabilize fractures, and handle cases of choking or minor burns. 
  • Manage unconscious casualties: Secure open airways and place breathing, unresponsive individuals into the recovery position. 
  • Provide psychological support: Offer clear, reassuring communication to calm casualties and prevent shock. 
<Incident Management & Escalation
  • Prioritize casualties: Conduct a swift triage if multiple individuals are injured, prioritizing life-threatening issues first.
  • Coordinate emergency services: Contact medical authorities (e.g., contacting emergency services) and convey precise diagnostic summaries.
  • Manage handovers: Remain alongside the casualty to deliver comprehensive incident details to arriving paramedics. 
Maintenance & Record Keeping
  • Inspect medical stock: Perform routine audits of workplace first aid kits, biohazard bags, and emergency equipment to ensure everything is fully stocked and unexpired. 
  • Document incidents: Log meticulous records of all medical issues, noting the date, time, symptoms, and exact first aid interventions applied.
  • Prevent cross-infection: Adhere strictly to sanitization and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) guidelines. 
Key Skills & Personal Characteristics
  • Composure under fire: Capable of making quick, rational medical choices in high-stress, rapid-response situations.
  • Active communication: Exceptional verbal phrasing to simultaneously reassure a patient and brief external medical crews.
  • Discretion: Strict adherence to data privacy and medical confidentiality regarding worker health data. 
Qualifications & Experience
  • Certification: Must hold a current, valid certification in First Aid at Work (FAW), Emergency First Aid (EFAW), or equivalent local standard (e.g., OSHA, NQF Level 1).
  • Recertification: Willingness to undergo mandatory annual refreshers and renewal training before badge expiration.
