Senior Business Valuation Analyst / Manager – Family Law

Position Overview

We are seeking a highly experienced and bilingual (English/French) Senior Business Valuation professional to support its Family Law practice in Ottawa.

The successful candidate will specialize in business valuations, financial analysis, and income determination for family law matters, including divorce, matrimonial disputes, separation, and financial settlements.

This role requires strong technical expertise in Chartered Business Valuator (CBV) standards, financial investigations, and the ability to prepare independent, defensible valuation reports for legal proceedings.

 Key Responsibilities

Business Valuation & Financial Analysis
- Conduct business valuations for privately held companies, professional practices, partnerships, and family-owned businesses in matrimonial and family law disputes.
- Determine fair market value of business interests for separation, divorce, and matrimonial property division.
- Analyze financial statements, tax returns, management accounts, and other financial records.
- Apply appropriate valuation methodologies, including Income, Market, and Asset-Based Approaches.
- Assess normalized earnings, goodwill, shareholder compensation, and related-party transactions.
- Evaluate business interests, professional practices, and complex ownership structures.

Family Law & Litigation Support
- Conduct financial analysis related to family law matters, including business income determination and income available for support.
- Prepare independent expert reports and valuation opinions for lawyers, courts, and other stakeholders.
- Support counsel in mediation, negotiation, arbitration, and litigation proceedings.
- Assist with financial disclosure reviews and identify discrepancies or unusual transactions.
- Provide expert witness testimony when required.
- Work collaboratively with family law lawyers and other professionals on complex matrimonial matters.

Client & Stakeholder Management
- Manage multiple valuation engagements and ensure timely delivery of reports.
- Communicate complex financial findings in clear, concise language.
- Conduct interviews with business owners, legal counsel, and other relevant parties.
- Maintain professional independence, objectivity, and confidentiality.

 Required Qualifications

- Chartered Business Valuator (CBV) designation from the Canadian Institute of Chartered Business Valuators (CICBV) is mandatory.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related discipline.
- CPA designation is preferred.
- 7–10+ years of relevant experience in business valuation, financial advisory, or forensic accounting.
- Strong experience in Family Law / matrimonial business valuation engagements.
- Proven expertise in preparing independent valuation reports and financial analysis for legal proceedings.
- Fluency in both English and French, with excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Experience

- Experience working with family law firms, litigation teams, or forensic accounting practices.
- Knowledge of Canadian family law valuation principles and matrimonial property matters.
- Experience in valuing professional practices, private corporations, and shareholder interests.
- Familiarity with income determination for child and spousal support.
- Experience providing expert witness or litigation support services.
- Strong knowledge of Canadian financial reporting and taxation principles.
