Job Description:
A Head of Department (HOD) in the steel industry manages a specific functional area (like Production, Maintenance, Quality, or Power Plant) with overall responsibility for strategy, operations, team leadership, safety, and achieving targets, involving process optimization, budget control, compliance, and continuous improvement using skills in technical expertise, problem-solving, and stakeholder management for efficient plant running and growth. 
Here's a breakdown of typical HOD responsibilities and qualifications:
Core Responsibilities
  • Strategic Leadership: Develop and implement departmental strategies aligned with company goals, overseeing operational plans.
  • Operations Management: Ensure smooth, efficient running of the plant/section (e.g., Steel Melting Shop, Captive Power Plant), managing daily operations, production targets, and process flow.
  • Team Leadership: Lead, motivate, train, and manage a team of engineers and technicians, fostering a high-performance culture.
  • Safety, Health & Environment (SHE): Strictly enforce safety protocols, statutory compliance, and environmental standards (QHSE).
  • Process Improvement: Drive efficiency, reduce costs, minimize waste, and implement best practices (Lean, Six Sigma, TPM).
  • Quality Assurance: Oversee quality systems, adherence to standards, and analysis for product quality.
  • Maintenance & Reliability: Manage preventive maintenance, major overhauls, and troubleshooting of equipment.
  • Budget & Cost Control: Prepare and manage departmental budgets, resource allocation, and cost-saving initiatives.
  • Reporting & Compliance: Maintain MIS, prepare reports, and liaise with regulatory bodies. 
Common HOD Roles
  • HOD - Mechanical: Focuses on mechanical equipment operation, maintenance, and optimization.
  • HOD - Electrical: Manages power distribution, control panels, motors, and electrical network design/maintenance.
  • HOD - Steel Melting Shop (SMS): Oversees induction furnaces, melting, tapping, and slag management.
  • HOD - Captive Power Plant (CPP): Manages power generation units (Boilers, TG sets) and associated maintenance.
  • HOD - Quality/Lab: Leads quality control, lab testing, protocol development, and compliance. 
Key Qualifications
  • Education: B.E./B.Tech in Metallurgy, Mechanical, Electrical, or relevant Engineering.
  • Experience: 10-25 years in steel/heavy industry, with 3-5+ years in a leadership role.
  • Skills: Strong technical knowledge, leadership, problem-solving, planning, communication, and familiarity with SAP/MIS/QHSE systems. \
