Job Summary:

The Operation Theatre (OT) Assistant will assist the surgical team in providing high-quality care to maternity patients undergoing surgical procedures. The OT Assistant will support the smooth operation of the theatre by preparing and maintaining the surgical environment, assisting during procedures, and ensuring patient safety and comfort.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Pre-Operative Duties:

    • Prepare the operating theatre by ensuring all necessary equipment and supplies are sterilized and ready.
    • Assist in positioning and draping patients for surgical procedures.
    • Verify patient identity and surgical site in collaboration with the surgical team.
  • Intra-Operative Support:

    • Assist the surgical team during procedures by providing instruments and supplies as needed.
    • Monitor and maintain a sterile field throughout the operation.
    • Handle specimens and ensure proper labeling and documentation.
  • Post-Operative Care:

    • Assist in transferring patients from the operating table to the recovery area.
    • Clean and sterilize surgical instruments and equipment following procedures.
    • Prepare the theatre for subsequent surgeries by restocking supplies and ensuring cleanliness.
  • General Duties:

    • Maintain accurate records of surgical procedures, equipment usage, and patient information.
    • Adhere to infection control protocols and hospital policies.
    • Participate in ongoing training and development to stay current with best practices in surgical assistance.

Qualifications:

  • Education:

    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • Certification as an Operation Theatre Assistant or similar qualification preferred.
  • Experience:

    • Previous experience as an OT Assistant or in a surgical environment, particularly in maternity or obstetric surgeries, is highly desirable.
    • Familiarity with surgical instruments and procedures.
  • Skills:

    • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow precise instructions.
    • Good communication and teamwork skills.
    • Ability to remain calm and focused under pressure.
    • Basic knowledge of medical terminology and aseptic techniques.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and move surgical equipment and patients.
  • Manual dexterity to handle instruments and perform tasks accurately.

Working Conditions:

  • Full-time position with potential for weekend and holiday shifts.
  • Work in a clinical setting with exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and infectious diseases.
