An oiler's job is to maintain and operate machinery, often in an engine room, by lubricating, checking, and repairing it. The responsibilities of an oiler can include:
- Lubrication: Lubricating moving parts, such as gears, shafts, and bearings
- Maintenance: Performing regular maintenance on machinery, such as checking running hours and ordering parts
- Repairs: Performing minor repairs on machinery
- Safety: Ensuring safety equipment is in good working order and complying with health, safety, and environmental regulations
- Cleaning: Cleaning machinery, tools, and floors, and removing excess oil and grease
- Documentation: Completing logs, reports, and other documentation
- Communication: Advising engineers on the condition of equipment and potential problems
- Assistance: Assisting the deck crew with loading or unloading cargo
Oilers were once common in many industries, including maritime, railroading, steelmaking, and mining. However, technological advancements have reduced the need for human intervention in lubrication, and many of these positions have been eliminated.
