An instrument technician maintains, calibrates, installs, and repairs instruments and equipment to ensure they operate smoothly and efficientlyThey work with a variety of instruments, including pneumatic devices, electromedical devices, navigational systems, and control instruments. 
 
Here are some of the responsibilities of an instrument technician:
    • Installation
      Install control and measurement instruments on new and existing plant equipment 
       
    • Maintenance
      Perform regular maintenance, such as adjusting system components and testing functionalities 
       
  • Calibration
    Calibrate components and instruments according to manufacturer specifications 
     
  • Repair
    Repair or replace defective parts 
     
  • Troubleshooting
    Diagnose faults using pneumatic, electrical, and electronic testing devices 
     
  • Training
    Train clients on operation and safety instructions 
     
  • Research
    Research new industry instrumentation and study details and instructions to install and use it properly 
     
  • Collaboration
    Collaborate with electronic engineers, process technicians, and other plant professionals to design equipment 
     
Some skills that are important for an instrument technician include: mechanical and electrical troubleshooting, understanding of computer systems and software, critical thinking, complex problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills. 
 
Some typical requirements for an instrument technician include: 
 
  • An associate degree in electronics, instrumentation, or a related field
  • Certification in electronics, instrumentation, or a related field
  • Minimum of three years of experience in a related position
