Job Description:
The Head Lab (SID/SMS) oversees the day-to-day operations of the chemical and physical laboratory, ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant analysis of raw materials, process samples (sponge iron, slag, steel), and finished products. They ensure that lab procedures align with the safety management systems (SMS) and quality standards of the steel plant.
Key Responsibilities
- Operational Leadership: Supervise laboratory staff, manage workflows, schedule shift duties, and ensure 24/7 testing support for the production department.
- Quality Control & Analysis: Direct the analysis of raw materials (iron ore, coal, dolomite), in-process samples, and final products (DRI/Steel) to ensure adherence to quality standards.
- Equipment Management: Oversee the calibration, maintenance, and repair of laboratory equipment (e.g., spectrometers, wet analysis equipment, physical testing machines).
- Safety & Compliance: Implement and monitor safety protocols (SMS) within the lab, ensure proper chemical handling, and maintain environmental compliance.
- Documentation & Reporting: Maintain accurate records of lab tests, prepare daily/monthly quality reports, and analyze data to troubleshoot production issues.
- Supplier & Material Management: Coordinate the procurement of laboratory chemicals, consumables, and reference materials.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemistry, Metallurgy, or Materials Science.
- Experience: Significant experience (often 5+ years) in a laboratory within a steel melting shop (SMS), sponge iron plant (SID), or similar heavy industry.
- Technical Skills: Strong knowledge of NDT, physical testing, and chemical analysis techniques for steel/iron.
- Leadership Skills: Proven ability to manage teams, work under pressure, and collaborate with production, maintenance, and quality assurance departments.
Typical Work Context
- Location: Integrated Steel Plants (e.g., Raipur, Odisha, West Bengal, Gujarat).
- Industry: Sponge Iron/Steel (Induction Furnace, DRI Kiln).
This role is critical for ensuring the raw materials are optimized for the kiln and the final product meets the required metallurgical specifications.
