Key requirements
A General Manager (GM) of a Steel Melting Shop (SMS) in a manufacturing plant is a senior-level position responsible for overseeing the entire steelmaking process, from raw material handling to the production of finished billets or ingots. This role ensures that production targets, quality standards, safety regulations, and cost-efficiency goals are met, often managing EAF (Electric Arc Furnace), Induction Furnaces, and Continuous Casting Machines (CCM).

Key Responsibilities
- Production Operations: Oversee daily steel melting shop operations, including EAF, ladle furnace, and continuous casting to meet volume and quality targets.
- Process Optimization: Reduce tap-to-tap time, optimize charge mix (scrap, sponge iron, ferroalloys), and increase yield to maximize productivity.
- Quality Management: Ensure the produced steel meets specifications for various grades (alloy, stainless, forging quality) by maintaining strict quality control.
- Maintenance & Technical Oversight: Manage preventive and breakdown maintenance of SMS equipment (furnaces, cranes) in coordination with the maintenance team.
- Financial Control: Manage operating budgets, control costs, and analyze monthly production costs to maximize profitability.
- Team Leadership & Safety: Lead, train, and manage a team of engineers and operators, while enforcing strict safety, environmental, and statutory compliance.
Required Qualifications & Experience- Education: BE/B.Tech in Metallurgy or Mechanical Engineering.
- Experience: 15–25 years in the steel industry, with significant experience in managing steel melting shops (Induction Furnace or EAF).
- Technical Skills: Deep knowledge of steelmaking metallurgy, refractory, and CCM operations.
- Leadership: Proven ability to lead large, complex manufacturing operations.
