Job Description:
A Substation Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical equipment within a substation, ensuring the safe and reliable delivery of electricityThey perform a variety of tasks including inspecting, testing, troubleshooting, and repairing transformers, circuit breakers, relays, and other substation components. They also play a role in implementing preventative maintenance programs, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, and collaborating with engineers and other team members.

Core Responsibilities:
  • Installation and Maintenance:
    Installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical equipment within substations, including transformers, circuit breakers, switchgear, relays, and other related components.
  • Testing and Inspection:
    Performing routine inspections, testing equipment for proper operation, and diagnosing issues using specialized tools and equipment.
  • Troubleshooting and Repair:
    Identifying and repairing electrical malfunctions, restoring power quickly and efficiently during outages, and working with engineering teams to improve system reliability.
  • Safety Compliance:
    Adhering to safety protocols and regulations during all maintenance and repair activities, ensuring a safe working environment for themselves and others.
  • Documentation:
    Maintaining accurate records of maintenance activities, test results, and repairs performed. 
     
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Switching and Grounding:
    Performing switching operations to isolate equipment for maintenance or repairs, and ensuring proper grounding of equipment to prevent electrical hazards. 
     
  • Preventative Maintenance:
    Implementing and managing preventative maintenance programs to minimize downtime and extend the lifespan of substation equipment. 
     
  • Collaboration:
    Working with engineers, project managers, and other technicians to ensure the efficient and reliable operation of the substation. 
     
  • Emergency Response:
    Responding to emergency situations and outages, working to restore power as quickly as possible. 
     
  • Reading and Interpreting Schematics:
    Understanding and interpreting electrical schematics and blueprints to diagnose problems and plan maintenance activities. 
     
Skills and Qualifications:
  • Technical Knowledge:
    Strong understanding of electrical theory, substation equipment, and maintenance procedures. 
     
  • Troubleshooting Skills:
    Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot electrical problems using specialized testing equipment and tools. 
     
  • Safety Awareness:
    Thorough knowledge of safety regulations and procedures for working with high-voltage equipment. 
     
  • Communication Skills:
    Ability to communicate effectively with team members, engineers, and other stakeholders.
